We decided to visit my parents yesterday, although the real reason for heading home was to pick up a few things from our old house that we still had out in the garage. Mom had to take an antique clock in for repair in the afternoon, so my parents suggested we stop by as early as possible. We arrived around 10:30.
They had promised us that we could have their old redwood picnic table and benches. It’s at least 40 years old, but is still in remarkably good shape. Mom gave me a whole bunch of other stuff as well, most of which was mine, that she had stored in their attic, plus some kitchen and dining room stuff she’ll never again use. There’s more stuff in their attic that they want to give us, plus we can have the bumper pool table, but we couldn’t take it all in one truckload, so we’ll get it another time.
Mom had long since tossed my old breeches, which I’m sure would have still fit me, but she had my hunt cap, crop and stirrups. I kept my riding boots, so I’m good to go the next time I rent a horse. There are plenty of places around here to do that.
There were loads of my old brass rubbings from my days in London, that I did in the basement of some church near Piccadilly Circus. Some of those brasses dated back to the 1200s. There were also old grave (i.e. headstone) rubbings that I did with a friend of mine when we were in junior high.
I snagged what I refer to as mom’s doll collection. Dad used to travel on business all over the world, and would bring home a doll from each country, in native dress. I’ll have to set up a display case for them in the library.
There were also all my old stuffed animals — mostly Steiffs.
Moving along, mom gave me her old professional-grade countertop mixer, a huge copper jello/cake mold, a nonstick cupcake tray for a dozen cupcakes, which beats the crap out of my old half-dozen aluminum one, and some antique kitchen implements. I also got her old cookie/meringue/icing press with all the tips. No more plastic bags with corners snipped off! I can probably find a dough hook for the big mixer either at Bed, Bath and Beyond, or somewhere online.
