Yes, I know the 10th anniversary is tomorrow, not today. I have to confess that I’m already sick of all the media coverage. Between the media and politicians trying to use the occasion to their best advantage, I’ve had enough.
I was there in lower Manhattan when it happened, and watched, horrified, through my office window as the second tower got hit, then, as both of them collapsed. The North tower got hit a few minutes before I arrived at my office, so all I saw initially was black smoke pouring out the side of it. Everyone on the street stopped to ask each other WTF was happening.
For years afterward, my company would not hold any meetings on 9/11. That changed when a new CEO was appointed by the parent company. Thank god for that — on several levels.
It’s understandable why longtime New Yorkers want to get out of town this weekend. The media-driven hoopla is too much. How many people relish reliving where they were, when, and what they did on that day, ad nauseum? I don’t.
Nobody who was there at the time wants to forget; we never will. I know the 10th “anniversary” of any big event is ultra-special for some odd reason, but, damn, enough is enough!
I plan to spend tomorrow avoiding the TV except for the Minnesota Vikings game. I’m already upset enough by all the songs the radio has been playing in honor of 9/11 and all the stuff on TV. So I’m going to spend the day listening to audio books and maybe renting a comedy instead.
I can’t wait until Sept. 12, when all this will be over, we can stop feeling strong, and get back to our double dip recession.
😀
You made me laugh, Koehler. Thanks.
To commemorate this day, we are raking and reseeding our lawn, after Project Weedkill worked. It’s schmutzy, it’s misty, it’s threatening to rain, so it’s the perfect day to spread 50lbs worth of grass seed. And make a big batch of chili, so we can get rid of some of our backlog of jalapenos, serranos, habaneros, Zavorys, and poblanos.
God, I love chili. I never make it same way every time. I don’t have a recipe for it. It’s just something I cook. My stomach can’t abide 5-alarm chili anymore, so I make it 3-alarm. It’s good enough to redefine “flaming asshole” the next morning, but not enough to make you reach for a glass of milk.
I rented the movie Priest because I didn’t want to relive what happened. That movie sucks ass. They didn’t have the one that I wanted at Redbox so I settled. Should’ve went for something else.
I too was in Manhattan that day. All of the media hoopla makes me more angry. I mean, I appreciate the thought and even some of the efforts, but I have to admit I got very angry while watching a documentary and screamed at the TV when it mentioned how over and over the red flags were ignored, I mean, deliberately ignored! I had to change the channel.
I probably would have screamed at the TV, too. Thankfully, I missed that. FoxNews was all 9/11, so we channel surfed until we found some geology documentary on History or Discovery.
A nasty t-storm rolled though about 11:15pm, after over an hour’s worth of preliminary thunder and lightning. Thought we were going to lose power, but we didn’t. After all that build-up, the torrential rain only lasted about 20 minutes, but it was enough to knock a couple of eggplants off the plants. Eggplant and poblano gratin for a side dish is probably a good way to get rid of them.
