As far as I know, my family traces its ancestry to Derbyshire. However, according to an Irish waiter who served us dinner one night many years ago, there are an awful lot of people in the town in County Cork where he grew up who share my last name.
The idea of consuming green beer disgusts me. In the spirit of celebration, though, I’m not above donning my green Aran knit sweater, my Connemara marble brooch, and having one of these:
If it helps, nobody in Ireland drinks green beer, and asking for a “car bomb” shot is likely to get you ejected from a bar, unlike here, where I expect to be bought quite a few today by people who don’t know just how offensive that actually is.
La feile Padraig.
Oh, geez. I had to look up what a “car bomb” is, drinkwise. I was living in London when the IRA was setting off real car bombs, and bombing pubs there, so that’s what I associate with car bombs. Yeah, I can see how offensive that is.
In fact, my school there got a couple of bomb threats. Fortunately, they turned out to be hoaxes. And, the basement of Selfridge’s department store got bombed half an hour after I left, after picking up a Wedgwood candy dish as a housewarming gift for a friend of my mother’s. We took bombs seriously.
(edited to fix one of those typos that I find embarrassing)
Yeah, it was a rough time to be in the British Isles. In Ireland, we were doing bomb drills in school.
Here’s a funny (and true) article re: Paddy’s Day:
Ooops. Link didn’t work:

Thanks for the laugh. That was funny!
I have no Irish in my blood as far as I know (german, dutch, maybe a drop of english) so I stick to just wearing something green. I also can’t stand green beer. Corned beef on the other hand? Yummmm
I’ve got a Corbett in my lineage. Somewhere. I hear that’s somewhat Irish. But whoever it was went and married a injun. So that’s what we’ve got. a squeak of (maybe) Irish and a whole lotta native. When’s THAT holiday?
It’s always on the Friday of the 38th week of the year. This year, it’s Sept. 23.

I was joking, talking about Irish and Indian day. Didn’t do a very good job of it, sorry.
But, hey. I’m just so happy Unicornado is out. I can’t wait to order one!
I figured you were joking, but there really is a Native American Day.
I was only able to trace my Irish ancestors back to where they got on the boat from immigration records. So I don’t what town. Wish I did.
I attempted once to make corned beef in a crock pot and it was a sad half uncooked mess. A shame b/c I like it just too time consuming for me to want to make.
Never had green beer either.
Stinky, drop the hunk of beef in with peeled and quartered potatoes and cabbage, add seasoning of your choice (salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, plus worst sauce is all a good bet), water to just covering, and put the crock on hi sometime in the morning. Check it in the evening. It should be perfect. That’s how we did it this years. It just fell apart.
That’s how I do it, when I’ve got a taste for it. Works every time.
I’m sad there’s no German Day, unless you’re counting Oktoberfest.
Why wouldn’t you count Oktoberfest? 🙂
I just wish we would make a bigger fuss over Robbie Burns birthday in January hereabouts. Might give us Scots a wee bit more to celebrate about. Although I’ve got almost as much Irish in me as Scottish, and damn near that much English. Every single one of my ancestors that we know about came over from the British Isles between 1690 and 1740. That turned out to be a tad awkward when we were at the Tower of London, which is the home base for the British regiment my ancestors were shooting at during the Battle of Cowpens. Oops!
I just want a special day where I can drink Weizenbock and eat strudel all day long and make it look legit. 😉
Hope your St Pat’s was a good one! 🙂
