We were without power for two days after the storm that slid up the East Coast blew through. With no electricity, we had no running water, no internet, and no phone. Without electricity, our base unit for the house phone can’t receive/send radio waves, and can’t record messages. We could flush the toilets, but it required getting jugs of water out of the swimming pool to gravity flush them. I could have used my cell phone if the battery hadn’t died on me three hours after the power went out, but since it’s a really old phone, I can’t use any old solar charger; I get a message “unauthorized charger” if I try to use anything other than the original charger, and it won’t charge.
We had our “Cowboy Coffee” maker, which is a Pioneer Ware percolator that can work on a stove top, grill, camping stove, or whatever gets hot enough to boil water. Failing that, we could have made “sun coffee,” which is like sun tea, but takes hours, instead of minutes. Our stoves do use propane, but with the power out, the burners have to be match lit.
The bonus is that when the power came back on, we were looking in the annex for something, and happened to look in the storage bin under the oven. We discovered an unused pizza tray, two jelly roll pans, and a broiler set. The latter probably came with the stove. The previous owners took the broiler pans that came with the stove in the main house, so they probably forgot to take the stuff from the annex stove with them, and we simply never had any reason to look in there before now.
Darn right I could use a couple of extra jelly roll pans, but it was the pizza pan that was the real score. It beats using a cookie sheet, which is what I’ve been using for two decades to bake homemade pizza. I can use it in an oven, or on a grill outdoors, with the removable handle, which is a nice option. I never would have bought one, but since we discovered that we own it, I’ll use it, and see if it’s any good. Fingers crossed. Otherwise, it’s back to my reliable cookie sheet.
