Congratulations to Christine, Janrae, and everybody else involved with this anthology! I look forward to reading it.
Thanks so much! It’s a great line-up of awesome stories; was a real pleasure and privilege to work with everyone. I’m very eager to see how it’ll be received!
Can’t wait!
….and liking the fact that Nicky Two-Pickles won’t be marring its release!
I can’t wait to read the rest of the stories in the anthology! I think it will be a fun read!
I’m at a loss for words: http://www.daverana.com/blog/2014-01-13/janrae-frank
My condolences and prayers to her family during this time 🙁
Just heard about this. My heart hurts for everyone who knew her, offline and online. She is going to be missed.
Oh wow. Condolences to Sovay, and others in her immediate circle. I never met Janrae in person, but have considered her a friend for about a decade.
I haven’t been online much the last month, so I just recently saw she had been hospitalized. I am so sorry to her of her passing. My condolences to her family.
Such sad news. Condolences to all.
Indeed, many condolences.
I was a a funeral this past weekend and as we were ready to leave the funeral home staff blocked the doors and barred us from leaving for 20 mins due to a tornado watch. A tornado watch in January? I thought to myself…hmm…the making of storm horror story where main character Rick Macione gets scared silly. Maybe there will be a sequel to Fossil Lake 🙂
Scared silly, then wets himself inside his trusty sleeping bag 😀
I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking up ‘fossil lake’ sequels. Though Nicky won’t be making a repeat appearance if I do one. 😀
I got a sneak peek at it tonight. Liked what I saw a lot. The stories look well written and some just made me cackle with laughter.
Should be out tomorrow. Think everything is set.
Sadly, Janrae passed away Sunday morning. Bastard stroke. Wished she could have seen this. Would have had a right giggle.
She liked coming here. She considered the regulars friends and anyone who stood against idiots like Nicky as good people.
I’ll always remember her twisting my arm to come here and call her a dirty mare. She loved the reaction. Good times.
You got to read the stories already? Lucky bastard. I haven’t even seen any info yet on where we contributors can get our copies.
I was asked to look it over to make sure it looked okay, so I read a bit here and there. Hard not to. 😉
I recognised the name Russell Nayle, by the way. 😀
Contributor copies should be emailed out tomorrow!
I look forward to receiving my copy. I’ve already read the preview on Smashwords, and am eager for more, more, more!
I just read a few pages of the preview, mainly Mary’s intro quote. Awesome.
I keep checking my inbox, but so far, nothing.
And we are go for launch!
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/397684
I’m about to head out to lunch at my favorite chinese place to celebrate the launch! Slight change in plans due to potential nasty weather on the way. Good food and friends anyway!
Have fun! I cannot wait to get the copy- it’s going to be such a fun read.
I was going to post this on Nicky’s blog but since he’s gone back to deleting comments I’ll do it here.
Mr Campbell, I have finally interpreted what Nicky intended to convey with this bit of doggerel “An informal professional — John Ramsey Campbell, you had insulted a contributor where John had made is story famous and a professional wrestler gave the face to this character. This contributor, you could learn a few thing about interacting with readers and be a little informal once in awhile.”. Nicky was implying that you had insulted Ray Faraday Nelson whom had graciously allowed Nicky to reprint 8 O’Clock in the morning, which as I’m sure you’re aware was the inspiration for They Live starring the wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper and directed by John Carpenter.
Wow, maybe social services can hook you up with a fee to be Nicky’s translator so he can appropriately interact with the world. I was completely lost when he brought up a wrestler. Quite a gift you have 🙂
Ah! Thank you! My original comment had to be expanded but was then deleted once more, so here it is:
The passage for which I sought a translation (surely not the prose of anyone with English as his first language) was this:
‘An informal professional — John Ramsey Campbell, you had insulted a contributor where John had made is story famous and a professional wrestler gave the face to this character. This contributor, you could learn a few thing about interacting with readers and be a little informal once in awhile.’
Your response by email:
‘You called me a retard by saying English is not my first language. I actually write using Canadian Spellings and some British spellings. You celebrate an author who called me a “retard” and contributes to that stigma of people who were in Like you I can hold my own with Lovecraft.’
On the contrary, I did not call you what you say I did. My point was that the passage cited above is incomprehensible, whatever version of English it is meant to be.
I think I can help with this one:
Nicky spent 2 weeks in Canada when he was a kid. Naturally, he cannot shake the Canadian spellings and perceived poor grammar he picked up there. He read Kung-Fu magazines as a kid and now is an expert in karate (which he interprets to mean kicking men in the balls). This makes sense in Nickyland.
He appears to have left out a word or 2 at the end, likely whatever his special ed classes were called as Nicky never moves on from grade school.
I rarely interact these days and have stayed away from the forum since I bowed out of publishing. The sad news of Janrae’s passing has saddened me beyond measure.
I was fortunate to share many emails and chats with Janrae and I consider it an honor to have done so. My thoughts are with her family and may she conquer the world of fiction in the next realm. May she be at peace.
Just woke up, but, I’ll be emailing all contributors tonight with a general update regarding contributor copies, interview possibilities, and so on! Bear with me and my wonky schedule, folks 🙂
Cannot wait. I’m sure it is going to be a great read!
Got it – thanks! Thank you for all the work you’ve done on this. So exciting!
