One of the unfortunate authors at Blu Phi’er posted the cover art for an upcoming Blue Phi’er anthology at SL. It’s gotten no replies. Fair enough; that’s not uncommon. I can’t figure out why the woman in the cover art has a longer index than middle finger, why her thigh is bigger than her waist, and what on earth she’s doing with her lips, but, whatever.
Curious to see whether Blu Phi’er was still alive, and who this author is, I went to the Blu Phi’er website. Whoever gave it a makeover should be shot. The home page force-fed me a flash media file that blasted really loud awful music out of my speakers. There was no option to select a non-flash version of the page. Rather than sticking around to try to find out whether the author is Daniela or Daniel A., and what (s)he writes, I closed the browser tab. Way to go, webmaster! If the objective was to keep people off the site, congratulations on your success.
I just hope this poor author is actually getting paid, rather than being billed for royalties, like another author I know.
he’s the artist, I believe. He does a lot of work for small press publishers.
Ah, so it’s the artist, not an author, who posted that. I stand corrected. Thanks for the information, KP. I also just now noticed that the poster signed it “Daniele Serra.” Odd first name for a guy, but his website’s in Italy, so . . .
Yes, he’s a man, and “Daniele” is a very common first name in Italy, where Mr. Serra lives.
I think he’s quite a good artist, though maybe a bit too influenced by Boris Vallejo, especially in the anatomical creativity (!)
I wonder if he gets paid promptly. 😉
That right hand is bugging the hell out of me–there’s no palm, making it look like the back of the hand, but the fingers are in the wrong positions for it to be the back of the hand. It’s the first thing I noticed about the cover.
If I am not mistaken, this crap antho from Blu is what they have Little Nikki working on. I think he might even be “the editor.”
As strange as Daniele’s art may be, it beats the hell out of the Blu logo…
I like his style… ‘Cept I don’t like the place that’s putting the antho out, since they’ve basically been screwing with Erik and Adam’s royalties. 🙁
Yeah, Daniele’s great; he did the covers for my two forthcoming OSS anthos, a cover for Dark Recesses first novel release and bunch of other work for Blu Phi’er (some of Eric Enck’s books). I hope his experience with BP is better than mine was.
He’s an awesome artist. I saw a few covers I was familiar with, like the Terrible Beauty one. Me and Jodi almost got in, but alas, were rejected (but after 300 others were rejected, of course! :D)
I’d REALLY like to see his art on something of mine. I need to get to pedelling something once I get it edited, then this other something I can’t say much about…
hehehehhee.
Sorry I’m a bit late to the party here, but I had to chime in that Dani is an awesome artist and one of the easiest people in the world to work with. I’ve been friendly with him the past, and recently had the opportunity to work with (he did the cover for Snuff Books’ first release “The Reaper”). He’s absolutely awesome, and I can’t recommend him enough. Whatever else there is to say about Blu Phier, Dani certainly isn’t the problem.
