shit — I am getting scared now, I have a feeling that the outbreaks
are the start of biological weapons which is scaring the shit out of me
now . . .
The rest of it (some reference to the source perhaps being a well, and people only getting sick for two to four hours) leads me to believe that Pacione was freaking out about some bacterial thing that was going around, that basically caused short-lived food poisoning-like symptoms.
What’s significant is the date, less than a month after 9/11/01. His fear, of course, was biological warfare around Chicago. It was more likely that another plane would hit the Sears Tower, or the Empire State Building than he would get poisoned, but he’s not good with logic and weighing the odds.

In fairness, last time I was through Chicago was April of 2002, and I admit even I was a little bit itchy to get the hell out of the city limits as quickly as possible…just on the off chance that that was the day al Qaeda opted to nuke the place into a big glass puddle.
I was in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 and in Chicago three weeks later. What struck me as spooky about Chicago, if anything, was how grateful the staff at Morton’s were to have customers walk in off the street, even without reservations. People were still afraid to go out to dinner.
