This deserves its own entry. Daggy managed to find Phoolbin’s “review” of Dark Hollow, and started a thread on SL to pimp it as an “interview.” A lot of people shot it down, but few addressed Larry directly, concentrating on pointing out the obvious about the review itself. In case it goes bye-bye, I have a a page grab.
Here’s a sampling of some of my favorite comments from the thread.
I take no sides here, but that kind of “review” is why so many around here ask “How can we help the horror community.” Petty nonsense and immature drama is why the horror community is viewed by so many as a joke. –Kenwood
I would recommend that next time the reviewer try reviewing the BOOK instead of the AUTHOR.
I would also recommend that he beware that his own advice, “You can’t write, you should be called on it.”, may come back and bite him on the beak. –Savage Steve King
This isn’t an interview. It’s a review, and not a very good one.
Do try to keep up, Larry. –VeryUnseemly
I’m not sure which is worse. The idiot reviewing the book, or the idiots who let him write the reviews. –Craig Cook
Woo! First comment.
To be honest, if anything that “review” makes me want to read the book! As reviews go, it felt that the reviewer was overly asserting his dislike author as opposed to the book, almost to the point of saying “I hate this writer, avoid at all costs”.
Maybe just me but I think all will see that review as a swing and a miss! Anyone for a bunch of sour grapes?
It should be pointed out that Larry didn’t “find” the review. Philbin emailed him the link and asked him to post it.
Has anyone ever compiled all of Mike Philbin’s online shenanigans (like his anthology submission guidelines calling for child porn or his incessant conspiracy theories) and sent them to his employer? I’m sure his employer would be bothered to learn that he does this on company time, using company computers. Even doing it from home, he’s made some disparaging comments about his employer, their industry, and their partner companies.
It would seem there are better ways to take swipes at people (not that that should necessarily be anyone’s goal, but still…), instead of posting (again) the message “I’m Mike Philbin and I hate Brian Keene!” We get that.
Is it me, or has that thread just gone “poof” and gone from the face of sl? If that is the case, I still had a page on my system from a post and I have captured it.
Credit where it’s due, then. Perhaps Matt is starting to see the error of his ways in allowing Dagstine and Philbin to run amok amongst the ruins of a once great message forum.
Yep, thread went “poof.” The fact that Larry also cribbed his title from one of Brian’s blog entries is further proof that he is lacking in the originality department.
Yes, it went poof. Here’s my page capture.
Vern, if there are any additional comments that were there, after I took my page cap, feel free to post or send it along.
Phoolbin posted the link to that review on his own blog, although it wouldn’t surprise me if he also emailed it to his toady.
Oh, and don’t be so quick to give Matt credit for anything yet. He’s still a douche.
Rusty, mine is exactly the same as yours.
Our comments crossed while we each posted, Mike. Neither Larry nor Mikkake has any originality. Take the word sheeple, for example. That word shows up in the comments of just about every politically oriented blog site. I’m getting so sick of seeing it.
Theres no “name and shame” with these thread deletes though, no public warning to show others not to take the piss on the forums.
Ok, not my forum and I know they can be hard to police but surely people who are common offenders should just get the chop.
Sadddddd.
This is from Mikkake’s thread about the Google bug. Matt may delete it, but it looks like he’s threatening to ban Loki.
lockdown
It’s not as if Philbin can tell you why the book is bad. He just whines and whines and whines.
As hatchet jobs go, it isn’t very good.
I also thought the review could have used some editing.
So, um, Janrae reviews Philbin and he posts about it on SL to complain, and now we get this.
The hypocrisy would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.
Oh, and yes, a ban for anyone who dares to question the subject title!
Matt does actually disagree with Mike on that thread, so there may be hope.
Matt disagreed with Philbin?
Wow. Matt must’ve taken his head out of his own ass long enough to get some oxygen.
Matt: “How about this? If your goal in posting something on here is to make someone else feel like shit, don’t do it, or else you’re gone. Now let’s move on.”
Um, yeah. Matty’s brilliant at determining what people’s goals and/or motivations are.
/sarcasm
He “takes no sides”, huh?
Wasn’t he trying to buddy up to the many EONs a long time ago before inexplicably becoming friends with Nickolaus (while still posing as Valentine Vegan)?
That was both sides right there!
Philbin must be accustomed to abusing people to such a degree that he does not seem to remember doing it to me in 04.
Didn’t Dagstine start that thread about ‘this day in history’ to simply attack Sighlon?
He said on that day he was wrong twice (not saying how, or in the threads where he was admitted specifics) and implied that sighlon takes a lot of “detours” ie sighlon plays into Larry’s trick of asking the same stupid question over and over to distract from his fuck up.
Does Matt deserve credit for deleting that thread? No. I thought that at first, then realized that shit like that is done to protect the Nitwits from futher embarrassment. Mamatas said it best a few months ago, in that the amount of ass kissing one does to Matt determines how much they are liked and treated by him. That is no secret. Throw your pride out the door and suck his toes and you are set over there.
Example: JRS has Matt for his #1 friend on Myspace.
Taking a break at half time to catch up on things. I see Mikakke is being as idiotic as ever with his “I speak the truth” malarkey. At least Matt called him on that B.S. Still the fact that Phailbin harps on any little thing regardless of the fact that REALITY ITSELF proves him wrong tells me he’s all ego, no talent and no skill. He’s a feeble minded wanna be, and yes Philbin, I will tell you that to your face.
Okay, I’m done here.
GO STEELERS!!!

Comments section is getting awesome.
oh yes. Didn’t know comments could be left.
Interesting how Philbin talks as if he was almost forced to review this, yet he isn’t on the staff of the site, nor is any book reviewer.
You have to suspect that people are free to contribute reviews of their choice.
Philbin did an interview with them a while back as well. I was looking to see if they had any specific info on how reviews are submitted or reviewers selected and I found this.
“Horrornews.net will be conducting future interviews with industry horror talent of all types. If you are in the industry and have something to say, drop us a line and we’ll make every attempt to get you scheduled with one of our interviwers!”
Is that typo from them?
I noticed a couple, inlcuding mispelling review.
I find the notion of Philly reviewing anything beyond what he leaves in the toilet amazing. Considering his Magnum Opus, I didn’t think he could read or write.
Yeah the typos came from the website as I just copy+pasted the information. I did a quick cross-reference to his blog and he submitted the review after being told the site it was originally for would be down a while with redesign issues. He also apparently submits reviews for scene360.
http://www.scene360.com/xtra/StoryBites/review_004_love.php
Philbin always has to push his own agenda doesn’t he?
Oh bugger, Mikkake does zombies…
http://www.scene360.com/xtra/StoryBites/story_012_zombies.php
I tried, I really did, but I couldn’t make it past the fourth paragraph.
Oh that fucking sucks. I had a feeling he was into Bill Hicks, but to see him do a ‘review’ and instead of talking about Hicks he rants about the terrors of now!
The only thing he bothers to really mention about Hicks was the banned Letterman interview, which was just shown. SIGH.
Yet again you get the feeling Philbin skimmed something and took what he wanted.
“Oh Hicks ranted about the same things I did!”
Yeah, he was also funny, intelligent, made great points and cared about people.
Also, first zombie story I’ve come across which I got bored with. Needs a bit of editing too.
WTF?!
“On another note, if anybody needs growing up it’s Mr. Keene. Or his PR staff. To have a tissy fit over a legit review is childish, and reviewing is a part of the business. It is impossible for everyone to love what you write, all the time.”
I missed where Keene had a hissy fit.
LEGIT REVIEW?!?! Someone who has openly had a personal issue with him for years reviews the book and in the process takes a shot at the American government and Israel, and it’s a LEGIT REVIEW?!?!!??!!?
?!!??!
I don’t even see it mentioned on his message board. HAHA oh wow that is awesome! STILL Philbin is ignored! He can’t get his attention to save his life!
Philbin’s such crybaby. Plus that last sentence of his in the quoted statement makes no sense.
But then again, given his disregard for anything resembling even common sense, are we surprised by this?
Reminds me of a “magazine” whose research skillz were so impressive, they thought an interview with Nicky was a great idea. No one questioned the fact that the owner of the “magazine” had been “published” by Nicky mere months before.
When the shitstorm hit, Dagstine had to close it down and apologize profusely. He went into hiding then, most don’t remember that, but he indicated he may never return online.
Point is, interviewing or publishing a “Nitwit” is almost certain doom. Remember a website/magazine that stopped accepting fiction after Pacione?
Wow. I hadn’t picked up on the last sentence of that review. I trailed off at the end.
That is just bizarre.
Noticed the scoring is very one sided. Shame.
In fencing terms, the opposition scored 48 touches on team Phoolbin (because that’s where you’d see numbers like this), while Phoolbin’s team got four red cards.
“Point is, interviewing or publishing a “Nitwit” is almost certain doom. Remember a website/magazine that stopped accepting fiction after Pacione?”
Point of interest: a good number of the magazines that have published Daggy have gone under or lost all credibility.
The moral of the lesson? Never publish a Nitwit. Nitwits can kill your publication–and your reputation.
From horrornews.net (this is either Dagstine or Philbin, I say Dagstine):
“Disgusting! While I enjoy mainstream horror, I do not believe the Israeli/Palestinien conflict should be taken lightly. I understand the analogy of the goatman, and what purpose his character serves. It is a metaphor. Furthermore, if this review is the genuine article I do not wish to read a book which basks in the “horror” of its bloodshed. Last month over a thousand people were slain, 300 of them children. Does Brian Keene find a novel about 300 dead children in Gaza to be reflected admirably? Does he find the catastrophe in that region to be taken without criticism?”
It’s Dungstain. You can tell by the sucking sound you hear as you read it.
The lack of reading comprehension makes me think Dungstain as well. I know Philbin’s just as bad but the fact he actually wrote the review means I’m assuming he wouldn’t make such a stupid mistake.
I have to ask can Mikkake do any research at all?
I was looking to see if he’d made a post on his blog about the reaction to the review saw some nonsense about how photographing a police officer in the UK will be illegal under section 76 of the 2008 Counter Terrorism Act after February, followed by the usual bleating about the police state and references to Judge Dredd which he probably thinks makes him edgy.
Out of curiosity I looked it up, Section 76 is just making one or two minor changes to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 which is currently part of British law and allows for the prosecution of those making “a record of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism” or possessing a record of that kind.
The act also allows for the defence of a reasonable excuse for the possession which would probably cover a police officer brutalising a suspect.
Thank Christ he’s not Scottish, the embarrassment would drive me to drink.
ROFL!
Research? Real Nitwits don’t do research!
Mikakke gets pwned again.
Man, I always miss the fun. Between the cat, the realtor, and the Schmucklines, I can’t always keep up, especially during the past few days.
I left him a comment about his lack of research regarding the photographing of police officers and now the blog entry has mysteriously vanished… I suspect aliens or the NWO myself.
Also I like what’s happening to his thread on Shocklines.
Wow, talk about ducking out of answering anything!
Several times now Adam B has specifically asked him how you question matter being made of atoms, and each time he hasn’t even pretended to explain it.
Maybe he’s a masochist? Maybe he likes being pwned?
Hey, I like pwnage.
Phailbin never answers questions. He refuses to address anything that challenges his so called genius, his pseudo-intellect. The man’s just a moron, plain and simple.
Agreed.
Hey Rusty: Can you delete my comments in here talking about and linking to his “review”?
If he gets a good amount of traffic, that place will only reward Phailbin, and I don’t want that.
Not if they read the comments…
It does make you wonder. When they attract attention, even the bad kind, do some people think they’d rather take that than none?
I do sometimes wonder if that’s what happens at Shocklines.
You like pwnage, Rusty? Is that being pwned or pwning someone else? 😉
